Record The Day

I was going through my emails and was reading thru Decor8 Daily's feed and totally fell in love with the blog "Record The Day" by photographer Jeska Hearne. She captures bits and pieces of things she loves (mostly torn out magazine clippings) collages them onto 3 x 5 index cards and dates them. My connection is that I do this too, only on full 8 x 12 sheets of paper and then amass them all into binders. They are my go to for design ideas, inspiration for my art, or just pure enjoyment of seeing all that has captured me over the years. And a way to not over clutter my cluttered studio.

I love the power these tiny postcards provoke. They tell so much even if the artist had no intention of a story but of merely 'keepsaking" something of inspiration. You can also purchase her photographs from her etsy shop!

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos or All Souls' Day)

The Day of the Dead (El Dia de los Muertos or All Souls Day) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have dies. The celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

Coastal Living Magazine (October 2009)

I LOVE opening up my mailbox and finding what new magazines have arrived and await me. Today I received the latest issue of COASTAL LIVING Magazine (Thank you Miranda). I previous blogged about a story from this issue called “Spirited Beach Bash” which you can read about here.

I was thrilled to find so many things inside this issue that caught my eye (let us show you the ropes pg 32), I am not really a “nautical” type gal but I love objects made from natural materials. I loved the woven decorative lights by Pottery Barn and the Oyster stick Chandelier by BoBo Intriguing Objects.

My favorite story is the Havens Idea Cottage (12 rooms, hundreds of ideas pg 35 -48) I could see my family living in this house! The mixing of modern pieces thrilled me-it was not what I expected and you got to love that! It is an eco-friendly community of 13 houses being built in I’ On, South Carolina. I want to move there now! I loved the tile (Nottingham Honeycomb ceramic tile by Ann Sacks) used in the kitchen, they ran it up the entire wall, talk about impact!

I also fell in love with the courtyard; can’t you see yourself lounging out there all day and night? I love outdoor décor-us southern Californians are lucky to be able to extend our living space to our back yards. This photo is a great inspiration. I may change the table’s chairs to Eames chairs but other than that I am sold on this!

So what are you waiting for run on down to your nearest mag stand and snatch up a copy of Coastal Living! You are going to find so much inspiration from décor inspiration to your next vacation! (check out the story on His and Her Belize)

October is here....

I love the fall. I think it is by far my favorite season. The air gets a chill to it, the days are shorter and there is this sense of new, of change for me that resonates deep. I love the holidays that come at this time of year. Halloween being one of my favorite. Not for the "darkness of Halloween"or "scary" decorations but for the one night that my neighbors are out in full force, this one holiday that brings community to a community. Which brings me to this article from Coastal Living Magazine. It's a great story how one mom created this shared experience among her neighbors called "Spirited Beach Bash for Halloween." Read it I know you will love it!

The Ode to the White Rose

One of my dear friends Jennifer is marrying her beau of 21 years (that's no type-0 yes 21 years) on September 19, 2009. Together, Jen and I are creating “roses” from clay. The roses will adorn the tables placed perfectly among the food and the drinks and tables that will be strategically placed around the pool patio area. Here are some photos (the whole process) and will post pics of the final “look” on the day of the wedding reception.

White roses represent innocence and purity and are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings. The white rose is also a symbol of honor and reverence, and white rose arrangements are often used as an expression of remembrance.

I also included a photo of the “party favors” I made for her Bridal Shower. That’s right, birds with roses and small dishes with birds and roses too. If you haven’t guessed already she’s an avid lover of birds (mainly chickens she has 8) and roses! Oh and anything turquoise.

Random Curiosities (that are inspiring me this week)

Randomness is a concept with somewhat disparate meanings in several fields. It also has common meanings which may have loose connections with some of those more definite meanings. The OED defines "random" thus:

Having no definite aim or purpose; not sent or guided in a particular direction; made, done, occurring, etc., without method or conscious choice; haphazard.

Craig "Skibs" Barker

I went to our friend Craig’s art opening ( I love his work) and thought I would share it with you.

There is something raw and edgy about Craig “Skibs” Barker’s work. His use of color, his use of words, and how he chooses to use the female figure (who happens to be his wife and my dear friend) creates this tension. Creating this soft, sexy subdued lightness while moving me through a darker, deeper realm of his world, a layering of life. A characteristic of his work and mine that I find so lovely.

Here are two of my favorite pieces.

"Laugh And Dream" 48 x 48 "There Is Bluebird In My Heart That Wants To Get Out" 24 x 18

To view more of Craig’s works and find out more about the artist go to http://www.skibsart.com

His work is on view now until September 15, 2009 at Neue Transit Studio (Santiago Street Lofts) 657 Poinsetta Street, Santa Ana, CA.
